Hidradenitis Suppurativa awareness week

Surgery is going good so far. Had a little scare last night, but doing ok. Stay tuned for a post tomorrow.

Remember this week is Hidradenitis Suppurativa awareness week from the 4th-10th. I got Missouri on the list with other states recognising it this year with content help from hopeforhs.org.

After constantly explaining what HS is to even Healthcare workers, it’s clear more awareness needs to happen. I think I need to make some phone calls to medical/hospital directors encouraging them to educate their staff. Our skin can become infected fast and we often end up in the emergency room.

I’ve been to ERs in Missouri, Indiana, Kentucky, Puerto Rico, and Kentucky for this in my 13 years with HS. Sadly, I’ve had to explain to nurses and even doctors what the condition is. If more medical staff are informed of HS, patients can be diagnosed faster and helped appropriately. It took 9 years for me to get a diagnosis. It shouldn’t be like this. I’ve read Hidradenitis is somewhat rare. I don’t think so. I personally think so many are misdiagnosed, never diagnosed, or too ashamed to seek help.

You don’t have to have HS to spread awareness. You can start now.
